The government of Peru has approved four additional methodologies that are active in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. This allows projects that are certified or undergoing certification in the VCS Program and that use these methodologies to be registered in the National Registry of Mitigation Measures (RENAMI).
The methodologies are the following:
- VM0038 Methodology for Electric Vehicle Charging Systems, v1.0
- VM0042 Improved Agricultural Land Management, v2.2
- VM0044 Biochar Utilization in Soil and Non-Soil Applications, v1.2
- VMR0014 Electric and Hybrid Vehicles and Mobile Machinery (AMS-III.C. Revision), v1.0
RENAMI enables Peru’s Ministry of Environment to track the country’s progress toward its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation efforts.
The approval, which was announced in a recently published directorial resolution, further broadens the scope of VCS project types now eligible under RENAMI. It sends a clear signal about the important role that RENAMI and carbon markets in general play in Peru’s efforts to achieve its climate goals.
Previously, the Peruvian government had recognized the VCS Program as an eligible mechanism for certifying carbon credits and approved eight VCS methodologies for use by VCS-certified projects registered in RENAMI.
- VM0047 Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation, v1.0
- VM0048 Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, v1.0
- VM0010 Methodology for Improved Forest Management: Conversion from Logged to Protected Forest, v1.4
- VM0016 Recovery and Destruction of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) from Products, v1.1
- VMR0008 Revision to AMS-III.BA.: Recovery and Recycling of Materials from E-waste, v1.0
- VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, v1.0
- VMR0007 Revision to AMS-III.AJ: Recovery and recycling of materials from solid waste, v1.0
- AMS-III.G. Landfill methane recovery, v10.0
Peru’s approval of the VCS Program and twelve VCS methodologies is an indicator of the program’s high quality and its ability to integrate with and support regional compliance markets, effectively advancing vital climate action.
