Overview

Methodologies in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program set out detailed procedures and requirements that VCS projects must follow to quantify GHG emission reductions and/or carbon dioxide removals and have Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) issued. Each methodology specifies applicability conditions and provides criteria for defining the project boundary, identifying the baseline scenario, assessing additionality, quantifying reductions and/or removals, and establishing monitoring procedures and requirements.

As a key component of the VCS Program, all methodologies undergo public stakeholder consultation and a comprehensive review process, including a review by a group of independent experts, to ensure technical rigor, consistency, and alignment with program rules.

At the core of Verra’s mission is empowering project developers with resources for advancing effective, scalable solutions that mitigate the impacts of climate change.

You develop the projects; we develop the methodologies that enable the design and implementation of projects that drive climate impact and improve people’s wellbeing.

Verra is looking for funders, technical contributors (paid consultants or those willing to offer in-kind support), and independent expert reviewers to support the development of methodologies in the VCS Program. Your support helps accelerate the publication and development of these methodologies that the world urgently needs.

Contact methodologies@verra.org and indicate the specific Methodology Development ID# and type/level of interest to support our work.

A visual of how methodologies are used in the VCS Program can be seen below.

Select Methodology

Each methodology is specific to certain sectors and project activities. Project developers can determine which methodology is appropriate for them by ensuring they meet the methodology's applicability conditions and all VCS Program rules and requirements.

Quantify GHG Emissions

By following the requirements listed in the methodology, project developers will quantify GHG reductions and/or carbon dioxide removals resulting from their project activities.

Generate Verified Carbon Units

After the GHG impact of a project has been accurately assessed,Verra issues Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) to reflect the resulting climate benefits.
