Inactive Methodologies

Verra periodically reviews active methodologies in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program to ensure they continue to reflect best practices, scientific consensus, and evolving market conditions and technical developments in a sector. These reviews are conducted at least every five years.

As a result of a review, Verra may revise or inactivate a methodology until a revised version is issued. If Verra inactivates a revised version of a methodology, the previous version also becomes inactive. Inactive methodologies may be reactivated, whereas permanently inactivated methodologies may not.

When Verra inactivates a methodology, information about grace periods for continued usage of that methodology will be provided. If the current version of a methodology is active but previous versions have been inactivated, information on the previous versions can be found under the “Development History” section on the specific methodology’s webpage.

The list below contains all methodologies that are currently inactive.

Project proponents who are interested in using an inactive methodology may send a reactivation request to methodologies@verra.org. The request should include the following:

  • A list of projects (you may consider including similar ongoing projects from other developers)
  • The estimated amount of annual emission reductions from each project
  • A justification demonstrating that no active methodology could be used for the project(s)
  • Status of the implementation of the project activities
