Verra has selected several proposed approaches to undergo further development into new or revised methodologies, modules, or tools in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. These selection decisions follow a careful review of a broad range of methodology idea notes (MINs), enabling Verra to advance high-impact methodologies for climate mitigation activities and bring them to market in a timely manner.

The selected methodology proposals include the following:

The proposals were selected from MINs that were submitted by January 31, 2026, from proposals that had previously been put on hold, or those initiated by Verra.

Verra recently reviewed the following MINs and methodological approaches under development:

  • 57 MINs submitted by external parties
  • 8 MINs initiated by Verra
  • 42 developments that were already on hold and re-evaluated.

Total proposed methodology developments reviewed: 107

Currently, Verra is advancing development on 31 methodological approaches: 12 in the energy and industry sector and 19 in the natural climate solutions (NCS) sector.

These processes are in the following development stages:

Total methodologies advancing development: 31

In its review of potential new methodologies, Verra prioritizes proposals that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a high climate change mitigation potential (a proposed methodology must meet the threshold of 500,000 tCO2e expected reductions or removals within five years of launch)
  • Are broadly applicable (i.e., covering a range of potential technologies and processes, and usable by projects in several geographic regions)
  • Support sustainable development
  • Do not carry unmitigable social, environmental, legal, regulatory, or financial risks

The development of those approaches would commence over the next year, and the full development process for each methodology is expected to last one to two years.

Verra reviews MINs on a periodic frequency to ensure that its methodologies continue to efficiently advance and expand credible, lasting, and sustainable climate action, and to determine if any MINs overlap with any proposed methodologies that are already under development, on hold, or recently archived or rejected.

The details of this process are included in the revised Methodology Development and Review Process (MDRP), a component of version 5 of the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program.

NOTES:

  • The next deadline for MIN submissions is July 31, 2026. Future deadlines will be published on the Develop a New Methodology page.
  • Verra will occasionally assess MINs outside of the scheduled review cycle if any of the following apply to the proposed approach:
    • It represents a revision that would significantly strengthen the integrity of an existing methodology’s integrity.
    • It can be integrated into an existing methodology development process.
    • It otherwise aligns with Verra’s key strategic priorities.
