WASHINGTON – May 10, 2026 | Two Verra methodologies have been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs), recognizing high-integrity carbon credits from coal mine methane abatement and opening the door to grid-connected renewable energy in more countries.

The two methodologies are VMR0017 Grid-Connected Electricity Generation from Renewable Sources and ACM0008 Abatement of methane from coal mines (Versions 6–8), add to Verra’s growing portfolio of CCP-approved methodologies.

VMR0017 Grid-Connected Electricity Generation from Renewable Sources covers wind, solar, geothermal, small-scale hydro, and wave or tidal power projects. The methodology also expands renewable energy projects in regions where carbon revenue can make clean energy economically viable.

ACM0008 Abatement of methane from coal mines (Versions 6–8) quantifies emission reductions from capturing methane at active and abandoned mines, preventing this methane from being released into the atmosphere. Only projects that capture and destroy or use coal mine methane or ventilation air methane would be eligible to apply the CCP label to their credits. Projects must also use a specific Verra tool to demonstrate additionality and meet a certain investment analysis criterion.

“These approvals enable high-integrity credit supply from sectors where buyers are increasingly focused on quality. They are also independent confirmation of Verra’s commitment to building methodologies that meet the most rigorous benchmarks in the market. More credible credits, in more sectors, means more impactful climate action."
