The government of Peru has approved three additional methodologies that are active in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program for use by VCS-certified projects registered in Peru’s national carbon registry (National Registry of Mitigation Measures, RENAMI). The methodologies are VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, v1.0, VMR0007 Revision to AMS-III.AJ: Recovery and recycling of materials from solid waste, v1.0, and AMS-III.G. Landfill methane recovery, v10.0.
RENAMI enables Peru’s Ministry of Environment to track the country’s progress toward its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation efforts.
The approval was announced in a recently published directorial resolution (PDF). It significantly broadens the scope of VCS project types now eligible under RENAMI and signals the momentum behind RENAMI’s continued expansion, a clear signal of the important role carbon markets play in Peru’s efforts to achieve its climate goals.
Last year, the Peruvian government had recognized the VCS Program as an eligible mechanism for certifying carbon credits and approved five VCS methodologies for use by VCS-certified projects registered in RENAMI.
- VM0047 Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation, v1.0 (PDF)
- VM0048 Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, v1.0
- VM0010 Methodology for Improved Forest Management: Conversion from Logged to Protected Forest, v1.4
- VM0016 Recovery and Destruction of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) from Products, v1.1
- VMR0008 Revision to AMS-III.BA.: Recovery and Recycling of Materials from E-waste, v1.0
Peru’s approval of the VCS Program and eight VCS methodologies is an indicator of the program’s high quality and its ability to integrate with and support regional compliance markets, effectively advancing vital climate action.
