Message from the CEO:
A couple of weeks ago, I attended London Climate Action Week. As always, it was great to join panel discussions and meet with stakeholders. But a poignant discussion during one of the last events of the week really stuck with me. At a session on soil carbon, a fellow panelist spoke of the extraordinary emotional toll that farmers are facing. This reality should serve as a striking reminder to us in the carbon markets that the lives of individual people depend on our work. This is the reason we must relentlessly work to scale the carbon markets.
But a poignant remark during one of the last events of the week really stuck with me. It was when a fellow speaker on a panel about soil carbon said, “Farmers face one of the highest rates of suicide of any occupation.” This statement should serve as a striking reminder to us in the carbon markets that lives of individual people depend on our work and that this is the reason we must relentlessly work to scale the carbon markets.
What will it take to achieve this? The answer to that question undoubtedly includes increased engagement with governments, more standardization across the market, improved communications about the market and how to navigate its processes, enhanced technology and digitalization, and stronger support of local communities participating in the market.
