While August tends to be a quieter month in the carbon markets, we still have some exciting news to share: Verra’s rice cultivation and landfill gas methodologies were recently approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs).

Both methodologies address methane, a greenhouse gas that is 28 times more powerful at trapping heat in the atmosphere than CO2. VM0051 Improved Management in Rice Production Systems, v1.1 is used by projects that adjust water levels in flooded rice fields to curb methane; VMR0016 Flaring or Use of Landfill Gas (ACM0001 Revision), v1.0 is for projects that capture landfill gas and flare it, convert it to energy, or route it into gas networks. Credits generated by projects using these methodologies are eligible to receive CCP labels if they meet all eligibility conditions.

At the end of July, we held our latest stakeholder update webinar, “Advancing Digital Solutions, Durability, and Jurisdictional REDD.” We shared how we are advancing digital solutions to build the market infrastructure and developing the processes that can underpin its growth, for example, by launching a next-generation registry. We also provided information and updates about Verra’s Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ (JNR) Framework. Thank you to all who joined us!

If you missed the webinar or want to rewatch it, you can access the recording on Verra’s YouTube channel.

We also hope you will join us for our final stakeholder update webinar of 2026 on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 11:00 am ET.

Community Carbon Efficient Cooking Programme – Tanzania (Verra Project 2676)

Congratulations to the Community Carbon Efficient Cooking Programme – Tanzania (Verra Project 2676)! In June 2026, it reached a milestone—having the first CORSIA First Phase Eligible labels applied to credits generated by a project in Tanzania that uses Verra’s cookstoves methodology!

In Tanzania, many low-income households rely on traditional charcoal stoves for daily cooking, which contributes to rising household fuel costs, indoor air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and pressure on forests. Through the distribution of energy-efficient improved cookstoves, the project is reducing emissions and supporting households across the country.

The project is registered with Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program and uses VM0050 Energy Efficiency and Fuel-Switch Measures in Cookstoves, v1.0 to quantify emission reductions from improved cooking efficiency. Being able to generate carbon credits that represent the project’s emission reductions catalyzes vital finance for this work.

The project’s impact extends beyond climate. To date, it has reached 224,789 Tanzanian households, created 285 direct and indirect jobs, and reduced cooking time by approximately 1.60 hours per household per day, demonstrating how high-integrity carbon projects can support both climate action and local priorities.

The project is implemented by Community Carbon, with UpEnergy Group and Sayari Safi Limited supporting coordination, implementation, and compliance activities in Tanzania, and SustainCERT serving as the validation/verification body.
