Dear Stakeholders,
As I write this, COP30 is winding down in Belém. We’ll have more reflections on the outcomes (and the ramifications for the carbon market) in the weeks to come, but one early observation is the clear progress in efforts to reduce carbon market fragmentation. Two recent announcements point to this:
- Singapore’s National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS), Gold Standard, and Verra published the final version of the Article 6.2 Crediting Protocol, which will support governments in their use of Article 6 to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and sustainable development goals.
- The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approved Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program to supply eligible emission units for use in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) during its second phase, first compliance period (2027–2029).
These are two examples of compliance markets where Verra’s high-integrity VCS Program will support impactful climate action and provide social and environmental benefits.
In other news, the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has clarified that Avoiding Unplanned Deforestation activities that are (1) using VCS module VMD0055 Estimation of Emission Reductions from Avoiding Unplanned Deforestation, v1.1, and (2) nested within a Scenario 1 scheme under the Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ Framework are included in its approval of VCS methodology VM0048 Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, v1.0 as meeting the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) criteria.
Finally, we are excited to share that the ICVCM approved Verra’s agricultural land management methodology as meeting the CCPs. This endorsement will help ensure that the carbon markets facilitate the shift toward regenerative agriculture and scale it with integrity, transparency, and impact.
Many more details to follow in this newsletter, but I’d like to conclude this forward by saying thank you to the many engaged and passionate stakeholders we met in São Paulo and Belém. I am always humbled by the people on the ground who are striving daily to make the carbon market the best it can be for maximum positive impact on people and planet. Thank you for the work you continue to do every day.
Best wishes,
Mandy Rambharos
CEO
