KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Verra today concluded a stakeholder roundtable in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was the latest in a series of carbon market educational and technical engagements across the globe. Co-hosted by Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX) and leading into the Malaysia Carbon Market Forum 2024, the roundtable covered a comprehensive range of topics, including updates on “A New Era for Verra” initiative, an overview of Verra’s Plastic Program, and the latest developments on key Verra methodologies.
Additional workshops and other activities are being planned around the world as part of Verra’s Memoranda of Understanding initiative with various national and subnational government organizations. Verra invites government representatives and stakeholders interested in partnering or collaborating with Verra on capacity building to email the Regional Engagement Team at info@verra.org. Visit Verra’s Events page to view upcoming webinars and events where Verra staff will be in attendance.
“This roundtable is in fulfilment of the memorandum of understanding signed between Bursa Malaysia and Verra on May 12, 2022, in which Verra will provide capacity building support to the local ecosystem players and potential market participants in Malaysia” said Dr Wei-nee Chen, head of carbon market, Bursa Malaysia Berhad. “The development of such capacity is instrumental as Malaysia is endowed with opportunities to develop high-quality carbon projects that can help facilitate our country’s journey towards achieving Net Zero as early as 2050.”
Working closely with Bursa Malaysia, Verra provided first-hand updates regarding Verra’s initiatives, methods to dispel disinformation, and in-person opportunities for regional stakeholders to interact with Verra personnel, a key commitment under the “New Era for Verra” Initiative.
The roundtable, held August 7, 2024, focused on Verra’s commitment to operational excellence, enhanced program integrity, impact, and accountability. It also detailed how the Plastic Waste Reduction Program can help scale waste collection and recycling in the region. The open forum at the end of roundtable brought together government representatives, international organizations, corporates, project proponents, project developers and validation/verification bodies (VVBs) to discuss pain points related to voluntary and compliance carbon markets.
Presentations featured the following topics:
- Updates on “A New Era for Verra” initiatives by Win Sim Tan, regional representative, East and Southeast Asia
- Overview of the Plastic Waste Reduction Standard by Komal Sinha, senior director, plastics and sustainable development policy and markets
