Verra has completed its latest review of Methodology Idea Notes (MINs), resulting in the selection of two approaches to advance toward feasibility assessment in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The review included 32 MINs submitted during the latest submission cycle, which had a submission deadline of July 31, 2026, as well as 10 previously submitted methodology ideas that were reassessed following an agreed-upon schedule.

In its review of MINs, Verra considers a proposal’s potential climate impact alongside sector-specific priorities when deciding which proposals to advance.

Verra selected the following methodology proposals to advance to the feasibility assessment stage, which is Step 1.7 of Verra’s Methodology Development and Review Process:

  • M0343, Revision to VMR0017 Grid-Connected Electricity Generation from Renewable Sources, v1.0
  • M0490, Methodology for Quantifying Non-Fossil Carbon Stock in Long-Term Product Pools Formed through the Circular Use of Product Components

For the full list of methodologies under development and current statuses, please refer to the VCS Program Methodologies – Under Development webpage.

In its review of potential new methodologies, Verra prioritizes proposals that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a high climate change mitigation potential (a proposed methodology must meet the threshold of 500,000 tCO2e expected reductions or removals within five years of launch)
  • Are broadly applicable (i.e., covering a range of potential technologies and processes, and usable by projects in several geographic regions)
  • Support sustainable development
  • Do not carry unmitigable social, environmental, legal, regulatory, or financial risks

Verra reviews MINs on a periodic frequency to ensure that its methodologies continue to efficiently advance and expand credible, lasting, and sustainable climate action, and to determine if any MINs overlap with any proposed methodologies that are already under development, on hold, or recently archived or rejected.

The details of this process are included in the revised Methodology Development and Review Process (MDRP), a component of version 5 of the VCS Program.

NOTES:

  • The next deadline for MIN submissions is July 31, 2027. Future deadlines will be published on the Develop a New Methodology page.
  • Verra will occasionally assess MINs outside of the scheduled review cycle if any of the following apply to the proposed approach:
    • It represents a revision that would significantly strengthen the integrity of an existing methodology’s integrity.
    • It can be integrated into an existing methodology development process.
    • It otherwise aligns with Verra’s key strategic priorities.
