Verra is launching a public consultation for a minor revision (PDF) (methodology development ID #M0268) to VM0042 Methodology for Improved Agricultural Land Management, v2.0 in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. With this proposed revision, project proponents will be able to differentiate between Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) based on carbon dioxide removals and VCUs based on greenhouse gas emission reductions.
VM0042 includes the quantification of both emission reductions and removals. However, in its current form, it does not allow proponents to differentiate between these outcomes and quantify the exact number of VCUs resulting from reduction or removal activities, respectively. Verra is therefore proposing updates to the equation in Section 8 of VM0042.
The revision would also enable project proponents using VM0042 to apply the appropriate mitigation outcome label to VCUs generated by their projects. The mitigation outcome label, which was released in August 2023 as part of updates to the VCS Program, is a new market label for VCUs. The proposed revision includes the corrections and clarifications issued in January 2024.
