Sectoral Scope

16. Carbon Capture and Storage

The VCS methodology VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage is globally applicable and designed for project activities involving carbon capture and storage (CCS). It utilizes a modular approach to quantify emissions across the capture, transport, and storage components of a CCS project. These modules can be combined as needed, depending on the project’s specific design and particular technologies utilized, on a case-by-case basis.

The VCS module VMD0062 CO2 Capture from Natural Gas Processing applies to project activities that divert CO2 separated from natural gas streams through acid gas removal processes which would have been released to the atmosphere, to permanent geological storage.

VMD0062 establishes applicability conditions, defines the module boundary, and provides procedures and requirements for determining the baseline scenario, quantifying project emissions (PECap,y) and leakage emissions (LECap,y), and monitoring. The project and leakage emissions calculated in this module, together with those calculated in the transport and storage modules, are used in VM0049 to calculate the net GHG emission reductions (“reductions”) from projects using this module.

Please note:

Projects may apply VMD0062 in conjunction with VM0049. It will be included in Section 2 of VM0049 in the next revision.
