Sectoral Scope

1. Energy (renewable/non-renewable)

13. Waste handling and disposal

AMS-III.G applies to project activities that capture and combust methane from landfills (i.e. solid waste disposal sites) used for the disposal of residues from human activities including municipal, industrial, and other solid wastes containing biodegradable organic matter.

Please note:

  • AMS-III.G.: Landfill methane recovery is Active until 30 November, 2026
  • VMR0016 Flaring or Use of Landfill Gas (ACM0001 Revision) replaces AMS-III.G, which will be inactivated as a standalone methodology under the VCS Program on 1 December 2026.
  • Projects seeking registration or crediting period renewal under AMS-III.G v10.0 must submit a registration request or crediting period renewal request by 30 November 2026.
  • Projects may continue to use the applied methodology version for the remainder of the project crediting period and update to the most recent version of VMR0016 at their next crediting period renewal.
  • Projects using CDM TOOL32 must have been listed as “under validation” on the Verra Registry by 21 November 2025 and must submit a registration request by 31 May 2026.

Market Labels

AMS-III.G., v9.0-10.0 has been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the requirements of the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework. Please note that to receive CCP labels for the credits they generate, projects using AMS-III.G. must meet certain conditions. A guidance document outlining Verra’s process for CCP labeling, the ICVCM CCP Label Guidance (PDF), is available on the VCS Rules and Requirements page.

All projects using AMS-III.G. that intend to request CCP labels at issuance must have a completed CCP Eligibility Verification Report Checklist Template (.docx), attached as an appendix to the project’s verification report. Where VCUs have been issued from projects using multiple methodologies, only VCUs from projects solely using CCP-approved methodologies are eligible for CCP labels.

Per the ICVCM decision (external), only projects that are using AMS-III.G., v9.0-10.0 and that are complying with the following additional criteria are eligible for CCP labels:

  • If they do not generate electricity (i.e., they flare the landfill gas or use it for heat generation), or
  • If they are landfill gas-to-electricity projects applying AMS-I.A or AMS-I.D, with an installed capacity that is equal to or below 10 megawatts electrical (MWe)
