Verra has opened a public consultation on the draft Methodology for Savanna Fire Management (methodology development ID #CN0135) in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The consultation will run from February 18 through March 20, 2026.
This draft methodology provides procedures and requirements for quantifying emission reductions from improved savanna fire management. The primary activity under this methodology involves shifting fire activity from the late dry season to controlled, lower-intensity prescribed burns during the early dry season. Reductions in the severity of fires and the total area burned in global woody savannas result in lower methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions.
The draft methodology uses a dynamic performance benchmark, remote sensing, and vegetation mapping for baseline setting and monitoring. It also establishes strict eligibility criteria, excluding non-woody grasslands to prevent unintended ecological consequences like woody thickening. Comprehensive appendices offer specialized guidance on fuel load estimation, mapping protocols, and regional default values for diverse ecosystems across Africa, Australia, and South America.
The proposed methodology was developed by International Savanna Fire Management Initiative and Maki Planet Systems.
