On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 10:00 am ET, Verra hosted webinar to provide an overview of the recently released VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, v1.0.
Currently, food loss and waste (FLW) accounts for 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and continues to increase in many countries worldwide. VM0046 quantifies emission reductions from activities that reduce FLW at different stages of the food supply chain (e.g., farming, food processing, retail, foodservice/hospitality, and residential). It provides procedures for quantifying the downstream emission reductions resulting from diverting food from an FLW destination (e.g., landfill) through, for example, demand planning, the use of apps to facilitate food sharing, and gleaning. The ability to generate carbon finance from these activities enables projects to scale up their impact.
The webinar covered the methodology’s development process and key components. It also included a Q&A with Verra staff and the methodology developers, including Koldo Saez de Bikuña from Quantis and Kai Robertson.
