Each year, Environmental Finance holds a vote to identify leaders in the voluntary carbon market (VCM) and related markets, including project developers, traders, and service providers.
Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, the world’s leading voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) crediting program, has won the award for “Best GHG Crediting Programme” (formerly “Best Voluntary Carbon Standard”) eleven times since 2012. Additionally, the Verra Registry has been voted “Best Registry Provider” four times since 2021.

Why Verra?
With 20 years of global reach, Verra is the most experienced standards body in the carbon markets. We have helped shape the rules of the voluntary carbon market, from developing high-quality standards programs to building systems that keep improving through practice, knowledge, and feedback. We have also been a leading force in the convergence of voluntary and compliance markets. As the market and technology have evolved, so have we. We regularly update our programs and methodologies, so they reflect the latest science and technology. Our flagship program, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program and a number of our methodologies have been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the Core Carbon Principles, the highest industry benchmark.
Most recently we launched version 5 of the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, which introduces the program’s most comprehensive social and environmental safeguards and places communities at the center of climate action. The updated VCS Program strengthens requirements across the full project lifecycle, with a particular focus on respecting land and resource rights, reinforcing stakeholder engagement, and enhancing adaptive management.
Later this month, we will launch our next-generation registry, developed in collaboration with S&P Global Energy. It combines a modern interface and powerful new technology that improves transparency, traceability, and efficiency across the carbon credit lifecycle and is built to shape and scale the infrastructure for a growing global carbon market.
