Verra has proposed several recommendations that highlight how Plastic Credits issued by Verra’s Plastic Standard can help address plastic pollution and fulfill the objectives of the Global Plastic Treaty.

Our proposal follows an invitation from the intergovernmental negotiating committee for member States and stakeholders to communicate potential approaches to meet the priorities of the treaty.

In Verra’s view, Plastic Credits can:

  • Drive investment to scaling plastic waste collection and recycling infrastructure, including in vulnerable geographies;
  • Increase availability of recycled feedstock to accelerate transition to a circular economy;
  • Incentivize collection and safe disposal of non-recyclable plastic;
  • Support new and existing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes to scale their impact; and
  • Improve livelihoods and working conditions of informal waste workers and empower them through inclusive consultation.

Verra’s submission also emphasizes that sufficient financial resources are needed to meet the treaty’s obligations. Plastic Credits play an important role in addressing this challenge by channeling finance to plastic waste collection and recycling infrastructure vital to curbing plastic pollution.

Verra looks forward to participating in the second session of the intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC-2) in Paris, France, at the end of May and will continue to contribute to the negotiations as an accredited observer.
