Verra has received official observer status with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and will participate in this capacity in the intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) meetings to develop an international legally binding instrument to curb plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The INC is planning two meetings in 2023 that Verra will join.

Observer status allows Verra to participate in the sessions of the UN Environment Assembly and its subsidiary organizations, circulate written statements to participating governments, and deliver oral statements during Assembly meetings. This will enable Verra to share with the UN Environment Assembly how high-integrity plastic crediting programs, such as Verra’s Plastic Waste Reduction Standard (Plastic Standard), can help achieve the goals of the Global Plastic Treaty.

More information on the upcoming INC meetings and Verra’s participation will be made available on our Events page.
