Verra has opened a public consultation on the draft Module for Post-Combustion and Process CO2 Capture (methodology development ID #M0479) in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The module is intended for use under VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage, v1.0. The consultation will run from September 29 through October 29, 2026.

The proposed new module covers multiple activities for quantifying CO2 capture from a range of sources, including from hard-to-abate industrial sectors like cement, steel, chemicals, refining, and power generation, into a single module. It aims to facilitate emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from the operations of industrial facilities across the economy and support long-term climate mitigation through the capture and permanent storage of both avoided and removed CO2.

Specifically, the module covers the capture of carbon dioxide through the following activities:

  • Bioenergy
  • Bioproducts, including processes that convert sustainable biomass feedstocks into biofuels
  • Combustion-based industrial heat and power generation
  • Industrial processes, including the production of iron, steel, hydrogen, fertilizer, and cement

Please note that all published modules related to VM0049 remain active.

Verra led the development process for this new module.

VM0049 and the existing carbon capture and storage (CCS) modules have been digitalized, and Verra plans to digitalize this new module as well soon after its publication.

VM0049, v1.0 has been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) criteria, the industry benchmark for carbon credit integrity.
