3. Draft Methodology Development
16. Geological carbon storage
M0479
VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage is globally applicable and designed for project activities involving carbon capture and storage (CCS). It relies on modules for quantifying emissions related to the capture, transport, and storage segments of a CCS project. These modules can be combined, depending on the project’s specific design of the CCS project or particular technologies implemented.
The proposed new module combines multiple activities into a single capture module. It applies to project activities eligible under the most recent version of VM0049 and result in the capture of carbon dioxide from:
- Direct air capture (see VMD0056 CO2 Capture from Air (Direct Air Capture));
- Bioenergy (see VMD0059 CO2 Capture from Bioenergy);
- Natural gas processing (see VMD0062 CO2 Capture from Natural Gas Processing);
- Bioproducts, including processes that convert sustainable biomass feedstocks into biofuels;
- Combustion-based industrial heat and power generation;
- Industrial processes, including the production of iron, steel, hydrogen, fertilizer and cement.
