Overview

Methodologies in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program set out detailed procedures that projects must follow to quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) benefits. Within each methodology, developers can find guidance on determining project boundaries, setting baselines, assessing additionality, and quantifying GHG reductions and/or removals.

As a key component of the VCS Program, all methodologies undergo a rigorous review and public stakeholder consultation process to ensure alignment with all program rules.

A visual of how methodologies are used in the VCS Program can be seen below.

Select Methodology

Each methodology is specific to certain sectors and project activities. Project developers can determine which methodology is appropriate for them by ensuring they meet the methodology's applicability conditions and all VCS Program rules and requirements.

Quantify GHG Emissions

By following the requirements listed in the methodology, project developers will quantify GHG reductions and/or removals resulting from their project activities.

Generate Verified Carbon Units

After the GHG impact of a project has been accurately assessed, Verra is able to issue Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) to reflect the resulting climate benefits.
