The proposed tool processes available lightning data to reduce the search area in thunderstorm-related wildfires, resulting in greater chances of extinguishing fires and reducing associated GHG emissions.
Summary of Development
On March 30, 2026, the development of this tool was rejected per the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process (PDF) due to the following reasons:
- Potential risks of reversals
- Complexity associated with setting appropriate dynamic baselines
- Complexity associated with ensuring project proponents can not only detect, but also reach and suppress fire
- Available resources, including funding, Verra staff time, and external expertise, are limited
