VM0050 applies to project activities that deploy improved cookstoves in households, communities, institutions, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. The emission reductions result either from enhanced efficiency and/or fuel switch to lower greenhouse gas-intensive fuels (i.e., involving the replacement of fossil fuels and non-renewable biomass).

Verra is considering the following updates as part of the proposed revision:

  • Requirements and procedures for the determination of the fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB) using the Modeling fuelwood savings scenarios (MoFuSS) tool, specifically for project-specific scenarios. Pending market developments, Verra may remove CDM Tool 30 as an option for the determination of fNRB.
  • Requirements and best practices for installing and implementing Stove Usage Monitors (SUMs), carrying out Kitchen Performance Tests (KPTs), and Controlled Cooking Tests (CCTs) as per the CLEAR methodology (external)
  • All corrections and clarifications mentioned in the C&C to VM0050 (released 3 February 2025)
  • Expanding the scope of eligible activities to include the use of heat retention devices

The consultation for this proposed revision (M0387) is open from July 9, 2026 to August 10, 2026.
