The proposed methodology framework is based on prescribed early dry season savanna burning, which is founded on a long tradition of Australian Indigenous (Aboriginal) savanna fire management practice. The proposed methodology framework relates to emissions avoidance of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in global savannas with >10% woody canopy cover and increased carbon sequestration in various carbon pools from the avoidance of more intense fires on savannas.

Verra is accepting proposals for an independent expert review of this proposed methodology. The proposed methodology was submitted by International Savanna Fire Management Initiative and Maki Planet Systems (open on external sites). The methodology is currently at “Step 3: Draft Methodology Development” of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.3 (PDF).
