16. Carbon capture and storage
Under Development
This proposed methodology framework applies to project activities involving carbon capture and storage (CCS) and is globally applicable. The methodology framework provides a set of modules for capture, transport and storage segments of a CCS project that can be combined, depending on the specific design of the CCS project or technologies implemented.
The CCS Methodology Framework includes multiple batches developed under separate development processes. This development process is for Batch 2 and includes:
- Module for CO2 Capture from Bioenergy Combustion
- Module for CO2 Storage in Saline Aquifers and Depleted Hydrocarbon Reservoirs
- Tool for Accounting Non-VCS CO2 in CCS Projects
- Tool for Differentiating Reductions and Removals in CCS Projects
For reference, Batch 1 includes:
- Methodology for Carbon Capture and Storage
- Module for CO2 capture from air (Direct Air Capture or DAC)
- Module for CO2 Transport
- Module for CO2 Storage in Saline Aquifers
Summary of Development:
The proposed methodology framework was submitted by South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd (external) and Perspectives Climate Group (external) as part of the CCS+ Initiative (external). Batch 2 is currently at “Step 5: VVB Assessment” of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.3 (PDF). Verra hosted a public consultation from March 1, 2024, to April 15, 2024.
