Verra has launched a public consultation on a new methodology framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The consultation runs from June 30 to July 29, 2023.

The new methodology framework for CCS activities has been developed by the CCS+ Initiative (external) and lays the foundation for a diverse set of capture, transport, and storage technologies and CCS project designs that will deliver real, additional, and high-integrity emission reductions and removals (ERRs) globally. Limiting global warming to 1.5℃ requires the deployment of CCS technologies and engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies to complement the pace of reductions, offset residual emissions, and create a net negative option for CO2 emissions.

The CCS methodology framework aims to span a wide variety of CCS-related activities. The current consultation covers the overarching methodology for CCS, as well as draft requirements for quantifying ERR benefits from projects that extract CO2 from the atmosphere using direct air capture technologies, transport it, and store it in saline aquifers. The consultation includes the following documents:

Other modules and tools that cover related CCS activities are under development.

Verra hosted a webinar on Wednesday, July 19, at 10:00 am ET to provide an overview of the draft methodology framework.

To provide feedback on any of the draft documents, please complete the comment template (xlsx) and submit it to methodologies@verra.org by July 29, 2023.

Please contact methodologies@verra.org if you have any questions.
