This proposed methodology framework applies to project activities involving carbon capture and storage (CCS) and is globally applicable. The methodology framework provides a set of modules for capture, transport and storage of a CCS project that can be combined, depending on the specific design of the CCS project or technologies implemented.

The CCS Methodology Framework intends to include procedures and requirements for the following activities:

  • CO2 capture from air (Direct Air Capture or DAC), from bioenergy (BECCS), from industrial processes, from fossil fuel or geothermal based power and heat generation
  • CO2 transport via pipelines, ships, barges, rail and trucks
  • CO2 storage in saline aquifers, depleted oil & gas reservoirs and geologic mineralization

SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT

South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd and Perspectives Climate Group submitted the proposed methodology framework as part of the CCS+ Initiative. Batch 1 of the methodology framework for CCS is currently at “Step 5: VVB Assessment” of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.3 (PDF). Batch 1 includes the methodology and modules for CO2 capture from air (DAC), transport, and storage in saline aquifers. Other modules, tools, or updates will be included in future batches.
