This proposed methodology framework applies to project activities involving carbon capture and storage (CCS) and is globally applicable. The methodology framework provides a set of modules for capture, transport and storage segments of a CCS project that can be combined, depending on the specific design of the CCS project or technologies implemented.

The CCS Methodology Framework will include procedures and requirements for the following activities:

  • CO2 capture from air (Direct Air Capture or DAC), from Industrial Processes, from Fossil Fuel or Geothermal Based Power and Heat Generation, Bioenergy (BECCS)
  • CO2 transport via pipelines, ships, barges, rail and trucks
  • CO2 storage in saline aquifers and storage in depleted oil & gas reservoirs

SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT

The proposed methodology is being developed by South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd (opens on external site) and Perspectives Climate Group (opens on external site) as part of the CCS+ Initiative. The methodology framework for CCS is currently at “Step 3: Draft Methodology Development” of the Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.2 (PDF).
