Methodology Framework for Seaweed Carbon Projects

 
The proposed new framework methodology intends to cover the creation of seaweed/kelp farms, restoring and conserving wild seaweed beds, sinking seaweed biomass into the deep ocean, and offshore seaweed farming. The methodology framework structure will support the development of broader and multiple project activities focused on marine habitats as the science becomes available, including offshore and deep ocean.

This concept note is part of a collaboration with the developers of concept note CN0122 – Methodology for Carbon Removals Through Seaweed Aquaculture. Both proposals aim to develop a seaweed methodology framework and the proposed methodology with cover a project activity module on nearshore shallow water seaweed farming and carbon sequestration and storage in ocean sediment.

The concept note was submitted by Silvestrum Climate Associates (opens on external site) and Ostrom Climate (opens on external site). This methodology is currently at Step 2: Methodology Concept Note Development of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.3 (PDF).
