Verra has opened a public consultation on the draft Module for CO2 Capture from Acid Gas Removal in Natural Gas Processing Plants (methodology development ID #M0367) in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The consultation will run from September 29 through October 29, 2025.

This module is intended for use under VCS Methodology VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage. It expands the scope of VM0049, representing the first module under that methodology to focus on an industrial project activity (i.e., capturing CO2 separated from natural gas streams).

The module addresses greenhouse gas emissions from existing facilities that process natural gas. In 2024, natural gas emissions rose by around 2.5% and were the largest contributor to carbon emission growth globally (external) in the energy sector. Natural gas production is expected to continue increasing in the near term, driven by both the additional demand for power from emerging economies and the growth of AI data centers in more established markets.

This module is being developed in accordance with Verra’s updated Methodology Development and Review Process, and it is one of the first examples of a sponsored, Verra-led development. BKV Corporation (external) is providing funding to support this process.
