The Batam Ocean Impact Project is helping to reduce plastic pollution in Indonesia’s coastal and river environments by training and hiring local community members to collect and manage plastic waste on the island of Batam, part of the Riau Archipelago. The project also strengthens waste management at the household level, tackling the problem at its source.
Developed by Seven Clean Seas, the project (ID 4199) is certified with Verra’s Plastic Waste Reduction Program and generates Plastic Credits to help fund and expand its operations.
From its launch in November 2022 to July 2023, the project has collected 1,823 tonnes of plastic waste. Over its seven-year crediting period, it is expected to collect nearly 20,000 tonnes of plastic waste that would otherwise pollute the local environment.
Through formal employment, fair wages, and safe working conditions, the project not only addresses plastic waste but also delivers meaningful social benefits to the Batam community.
