Methodology for Retrofit of Existing Buildings to Reduce Operation and Embodied Carbon

The proposed methodology applies to retrofit project activities in existing buildings and aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through improvements in operational energy performance and reductions in embodied carbon associated with construction materials. Project activities include energy efficiency measures implemented during building operation and material substitution measures applied during renovation works.

• On October 12, 2026, the development of this methodology was rejected per the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process (PDF). After careful review, Verra determined that the proposal’s climate impact was not as high as that of other ideas. Verra will therefore not proceed this approach to the full methodology development process at this time.
