The Government of Misiones in Argentina has issued a provincial resolution to officially adopt a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Verra. The MOU will support the province’s ability to engage in the carbon markets, benefiting local communities and biodiversity while advancing climate action globally.

Under the MOU, Verra commits to offering capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and other training activities related to carbon markets, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, the Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ (JNR) Framework, the Verra Registry, Article 6.2 under the Paris Agreement, the Carbon Offsetting Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and related topics.

Verra recently approved its first-ever government-led forest carbon program at a jurisdictional scale in the Province of Misiones, which reflects one practical example of Misiones’ commitment to engage in carbon markets. The MOU enables Verra to support the province in this endeavor by building Misiones’ understanding of the broad range of topics related to carbon markets and expanding its capacity to implement related activities.

Pamela Kruszelnicki, director of financial management at the Ministry of Treasury, Finance, Public Works, and Public Services of Misiones, said: “This Memorandum of Understanding with Verra represents another step in reaffirming Misiones as an international example in the implementation of innovative climate action solutions. Through this cooperation, we seek to strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of our government teams, promote knowledge exchange, and continue developing tools that support forest conservation while generating environmental, social, and economic benefits for the people of Misiones.

“The recent certification of our Jurisdictional REDD+ Program under Verra’s JNR Framework—a first-of-its-kind milestone globally—demonstrates that it is possible to combine development, conservation, and climate finance under high standards of integrity and transparency.”
