Verra has issued corrections and clarifications (PDF) applicable to Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology VM0042 Improved Agricultural Land Management, v2.2. The corrections and clarifications are effective as of June 11, 2026.
Projects using VM0042 facilitate the scaling up of soil carbon sequestration activities, an important nature-based solution for climate change mitigation.
The corrections pertain to equations that are used to account for leakage from production declines.
The clarifications relate to the following:
- The expectation for a qualitative description of the baseline scenario and the associated requirements to determine eligibility areas in grouped projects
- The evidence project proponents must provide to demonstrate additionality
- The interplay between quantification units and eligibility areas per the VCS Standard, v5.0
- The allowance for projects to transition to new eligible methods to quantify soil organic carbon per updated versions of the methodology
- The interplay between timing requirements considering onboarding fields and producers over time, remeasurement intervals, options for back-modeling, and updates to the model validation report
Interested stakeholders can find a list of all updates at the beginning of the VM0042 correction and clarifications document.
