Forests have the potential to contribute over 20% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and removals needed to meet the Paris Agreement targets.[1] As is the case with other Nature-Based Solutions (NBS),[2] finance for such approaches has been slow to materialize. Carbon credit sales would help drive funding to NBS and thereby assist in addressing this barrier.

To this end, Verra is looking to establish an external working group focused on forest carbon innovations. This group will help identify and define new approaches and potential revisions to Verra standards, supporting methodologies, and tools that could significantly scale up forest-based climate solutions. While the group will consider the full range of forest-related opportunities, strong attention will be given to activities that sequester carbon from the atmosphere, such as reforestation and agroforestry. Emphasis will be placed on these activities due to their unique implementation and financing challenges.

The working group will build on the success of Verra’s existing Blue Carbon and Agricultural Land Management (ALM) working groups. These working groups were launched in January 2020 to help unlock finance for blue carbon and ALM projects. To date, they have identified a number of standards-related issues that may burden and hinder the development and scaling of these project types. Based on the working groups recommendations, Verra is developing concrete solutions to these challenges that would better support projects, while maintaining the high-quality of Verra’s Standards and associated credits and claims.

The forest carbon innovations working group will consist of approximately 10 to 15 individuals. It will be run for an initial six-month period, with the possibility of extension. Further details on the scope of the working group, criteria for participation and instructions for applying, can be found in the Terms of Reference. Interested and qualified stakeholders can apply through Friday, 17 July 2020. Successful candidates will be notified by 14 August 2020, and the first working group meeting will be held in September.
