The government of Peru has approved three additional methodologies from Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program to be used by VCS-certified projects that can be registered in Peru’s national carbon registry (National Registry of Mitigation Measures, RENAMI). RENAMI enables Peru’s Ministry of Environment to track the country’s progress toward its Nationally Determined Contributions and the emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation efforts.

The approved methodologies are VM0010 Methodology for Improved Forest Management: Conversion from Logged to Protected Forest, v1.4, VM0016 Recovery and Destruction of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) from Products, v1.1, and VMR0008 Revision to AMS-III.BA.: Recovery and Recycling of Materials from E-waste, v1.0.

Earlier this year, Verra welcomed the Peruvian government’s official recognition of the VCS Program as an eligible mechanism for certifying carbon credits. At the time of the initial resolution, Peru approved two VCS methodologies—VM0047 Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation, v1.0 and VM0048 Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, v1.0—for use by VCS-certified projects registered in RENAMI.

Peru’s approval of the VCS Program and now five VCS methodologies is an indicator of the program’s high quality and its ability to integrate with and support regional compliance markets, effectively advancing critically needed climate action.
