Welcome to Verra’s November Newsletter!

As COP29 in Baku winds down, we are once again reminded of the tremendous evolution the voluntary carbon market (VCM) has undergone in recent years. Once considered as sitting on the sidelines of real climate action, the VCM is now a central part of many discussions during these international climate negotiations.

For example, in Baku, the National Climate Change Secretariat of Singapore, Gold Standard, and Verra released initial recommendations for an Article 6.2 Crediting Protocol that outlines how existing independent carbon crediting programs could support countries using Article 6.2 to reach their climate goals. Beyond that, in her first COP as Verra CEO, Mandy Rambharos spoke at 11 events and participated in countless other discussions on how to strengthen and improve the VCM.

Last week, we were pleased to learn that the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) approved both Verra’s new REDD methodology and the Jurisdictional and Nested REDD+ (JNR) Framework in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program as meeting the requirements of the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework. This approval by the ICVCM highlights the rigor of Verra’s REDD+ frameworks and reinforces their role as credible channels for forest conservation finance.

We also recently learned that the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approved the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), extending the program’s eligibility into CORSIA’s First Phase (2024–2026).

Both endorsements are an important indicator of the high integrity of the VCS Program and mark a critical step forward for Verra and the voluntary carbon market.

In late October, we advanced our work in other important markets by launching the Nature Framework. An asset methodology in Verra’s Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) Program, the framework will incentivize widespread investment in measurable conservation and restoration activities benefiting nature and people.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our October Stakeholder Update Webinar (YouTube). We look forward to continuing these quarterly sessions in 2025, and adding additional, regular, targeted engagements with stakeholders as well throughout the year.
