In a recent guest commentary on Carbon Pulse Verra’s Candace Vinke, Senior Director, Nature-based Innovations and Rishi Das, Manager, Technologies for Natural Climate Solutions discuss a proposed long-term reversal monitoring system (LTRMS) for the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program that would alleviate concerns about the permanence of credits from nature-based projects.
Natural climate solutions can greatly contribute to limiting global warming, but are vulnerable to fires and other disturbances.
Taking advantage of recent scientific and technological progress, the LTRMS would monitor nature-based projects for potential loss events and also quantify any resulting reversals beyond the crediting period.
