Although COVID-19 has paused sports for now, teams, leagues and athletes are still looking to tackle climate change. Recognizing that they have a unique ability to educate fans about opportunities to take action and enact change, a number of actors in the sports industry are including carbon reduction and offsetting into their overall sustainability strategy.
On 20 May, Verra CEO David Antonioli, together with Nick Aster of South Pole and Norman Vosschulte with the Philadelphia Eagles, participated in a webinar on this topic, hosted and moderated by Kristin Hanczor from the Green Sports Alliance. David discussed how carbon offsetting can be an important and useful tool to address a team’s carbon footprint, as well as how sustainable development outcomes of projects can serve as a link between work on the ground and the team’s activities.
