The proposed tool evaluates CO2 emissions and removals from natural carbon pools. It achieves this by estimating net ecosystem exchange (NEE) through machine learning algorithms trained on multispectral remote sensing imagery, meteorological variables, and direct carbon flux measurements obtained from eddy covariance flux stations. The proposed tool provides a holistic view of CO2 exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere while reducing uncertainties in estimating the carbon benefits of nature-based solutions.
SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT
The methodology idea note was rejected by Verra, as per Section 2.1.6 and 3.1.7 of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF). The proposal overlaps with an ongoing initiative to revise VT0005 Tool for Measuring Aboveground Live Forest Biomass using Remote Sensing, v1.0.
