Methodology for Reducing Cattle Methane Emissions Through Direct Reduction of Exhaled Methane

This proposed methodology is globally applicable and applies to project activities that capture methane emissions from cattle with external means (e.g., using a wearable mask that is attached to an animal’s snout) and converting methane into less GHG-impacting components, such as CO₂ and water. Methane is transformed into CO₂ and water outside of the animal without affecting the animal’s rumen processes or milk/meat/manure productivity and quality. 

• The methodology was proposed by ZELP Ltd under an older version of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process (MDRP) (PDF).
• In March 2023, the development of this methodology was put on hold. Verra will consider resuming the development once there is publicly available and scientifically credible evidence that demonstrates the following:

1) the technology is able to consistently reduce methane emissions, and
2) the impact on animal safety and well-being.

• In March 2026, Verra reassessed the priority of methodologies under development and decided to keep this proposal on hold.
• Verra will reassess whether to resume the development of this methodology in Q1 2027
