Methodology for Avoided Bottom Trawling

This proposed methodology applies to projects that reduce bottom trawling in a country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to avoid CO2 emissions caused by the resuspension of ocean floor sediment due to this type of fishing. The methodology includes global and local default values, and guidance for developers to create their own locally-specific values for the avoidance of carbon emissions caused by bottom trawling.

The concept note was submitted by National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas (external) and Silvestrum Climate Associates (external). It is currently “Step 3: Draft Methodology Development” of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF).
