13. Waste handling and disposal
CN0087
The methodology applies to food waste that is diverted to a landfill. The proposed methodology demonstrates the accounting procedure for the reduction in methane emissions from landfills by diverting food waste to a composting facility that uses composting by an insect-based process to produce a usable compost for other applications such as fertilizer for local gardens and landscaping. Composting using an insect-based process is more efficient than traditional composting processes using windrows. The insect-based process takes less time to convert food waste to compost, using less area for the process, and can be operated indoors on a year-round basis. The methodology is globally applicable.
Summary of Development:
Verra rejected the draft methodology, as per Sections 2.1.5 and 2.1.6 of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (MDRP). The decision was based on the development process not reasonably progressing toward resolution and a high-quality methodology. Also, a detailed assessment of existing methodologies concluded that there are two overlapping CDM methodologies, ACM0022 (external) and AMS-III.F (external) that are active under the VCS Program and can be applied for insect composting projects.
