Final Verra Review

13. Waste handling and disposal
Under Development
The methodology applies to food waste that is diverted to a landfill. The proposed methodology demonstrates the accounting procedure for the reduction in methane emissions from landfills by diverting food waste to a composting facility that uses composting by an insect-based process to produce a usable compost for other applications such as fertilizer for local gardens and landscaping. Composting using an insect-based process is more efficient than traditional composting processes using windrows. The insect-based process takes less time to convert food waste to compost, using less area for the process, and can be operated indoors on a year-round basis. The methodology is globally applicable.
Summary of Development:
The proposed methodology is being developed by One Earth Fund, Inc. (external) and is currently at “Step 6: Final Verra Review and Decision” of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF). Verra hosted a public consultation on June 1, 2020 until July 1, 2021.
