Verra takes allegations of human rights abuses extremely seriously, and we are committed to ensuring all projects we certify uphold high ethical standards.
In June 2023, following concerns raised by Human Rights Watch, we initiated an investigation into the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project. The scope of that review was then extended earlier this month.
As our wide-ranging review into the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project is ongoing, it is our policy to not provide commentary in order to preserve the integrity of the process and prevent any undue influence. Integrity and transparency are vital to Verra, and we will work diligently to ensure that the findings of our investigation are communicated as soon as possible.
About Verra and Independence
Verra is a mission-driven, nonprofit organization that tackles the toughest global challenges, including the devastating effects of climate change. Our work has driven innovation and helped keep forests standing in the face of enormous global pressure to cut them down.
Verra’s landmark Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program follows the same practices for auditing and independence as those that extend beyond the voluntary carbon market and the nonprofit sector: the audited entity commonly covers the auditing costs. Moreover, these validation/verification bodies (VVBs) must be accredited and adhere to the relevant ISO standards, further ensuring their independence.
Our stakeholders, and the public, hold us to the highest degrees of accountability. It is a responsibility we take incredibly seriously.
