Verra is seeking a short-term consultant to lead a 4-month agroforestry methodology scoping process. The objective of the consultancy is to determine whether Verra should build on existing methodologies or consider developing a new agroforestry-specific methodology to scale up agroforestry project activity in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, the world’s leading voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) crediting program. The consultant will:

  1. conduct a review of existing agroforestry projects and their associated GHG accounting methodologies in the VCS and other GHG crediting programs;
  2. carry out stakeholder interviews; and
  3. develop recommendations and proposed next steps in a final report.

Agroforestry offers numerous socioeconomic and environmental benefits and can contribute significantly to climate change mitigation by removing atmospheric CO2 and storing it in woody biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools. However, agroforestry is a project activity in only a few of the over 200 registered Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) projects under the VCS. Hence, this consultancy will investigate ways to incentivize and scale up agroforestry projects in the VCS Program.
