Jamey Mulligan, Senior Scientist at Amazon, spoke with Carbon Pulse about the pre-consultation launch for a new carbon credit label for nature-based removal units that would signify greater attention paid to accurate emissions baselines and preventing leakage.

The ABACUS Verified Carbon Unit (VCU) label is a product of Verra’s working group of the same name, made up of tech companies (Amazon), academics (University of California at Berkeley; Standford Woods Institute for the Environment), green groups (Conservation International, EDF, The Nature Conservancy), and VER procurement firms (Carbon Direct, Pachama).

The label would apply to projects validated and verified under Verra’s forthcoming afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) methodology.
