Verra has inactivated VM0022 Quantifying N2O Emissions Reductions in Agricultural Crops through Nitrogen Fertilizer Rate Reduction, v1.1 as per section 5.1.4 of the Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF), since no projects have been registered within five years. Further, the methodology has outdated approaches for comprehensively accounting for GHG emissions fluxes. Projects are encouraged to check the applicability of the latest version of VM0042 Methodology for Improved Agricultural Land Management, which includes nitrogen management as an eligible project activity.

This methodology quantifies reductions of nitrous oxide from cropping systems. The methodology applies to projects in the United States that optimize nitrogen fertilizer through the use of verifiable best management practices, specific to the crop, soil and environmental conditions of the project. The methodology utilizes an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) default emission factor or an empirically derived, regional emission factor to calculate nitrous oxide emission reductions directly associated with reducing the application rate of inorganic and organic fertilizers.
