Revision to VM0022: Quantifying N2O Emissions Reductions in Agricultural Crops through Nitrogen Fertilizer Rate Reduction, v1.1

VM0022 v.1.1 quantifies reductions of nitrous oxide (N₂O) from cropping systems. The methodology is applicable to projects in the United States that optimize nitrogen fertilizer through the use of verifiable best management practices, specific to the crop, soil, and environmental conditions of the project.

The proposed methodology expands the scope to replacing synthetic nitrogen fertilizer with nitrogen that is biologically fixed within the growing season and removing the geographic limitations imposed by the current methodology.

The proposed methodology was rejected by Verra, as per Sections 2.1.5 and 2.1.6 of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, v4.4 (PDF). The decision was made because the development process was not reasonably progressing towards resolution, and technical concerns regarding additionality and baseline crediting remained unresolved.
