AMS-III.BA.: Recovery and recycling of materials from E-waste is a small-scale CDM methodology eligible under the VCS Program. E-waste (waste electrical and electronic equipment) contains rare and precious metals that require specific technologies to extract and refine them. Eligible project activities include recovering and processing E-waste into secondary materials, thus displacing the production of virgin materials, resulting in energy savings and reduced GHG emissions. The proposed revision involves broadening the scope to allow for large-scale projects and incentivizing the development of low-emission recycling technologies.

SUMMARY OF DEVELOPMENT

The methodology idea note was rejected by Verra, as per Section 3.1.6(3) of the Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.2 (PDF). The decision was based on the following:
  • the proposal’s low climate change mitigation potential compared to other proposals; and
  • concerns related to regulatory surplus and additionality due to increasing e-waste recycling policies in many countries.
