Revision to ACM0001: Flaring or Use of Landfill Gas

 
ACM0001 applies to project activities that capture and destroy landfill gas (LFG). Eligible uses of the captured LFG include any combination of the following:

• Flaring;
• Generating electricity;
• Generating heat in a boiler, air heater or kiln or glass melting furnace; or
• Supplying LFG to consumers through natural gas distribution networks, dedicated pipelines, or trucks.

The proposed revision expands the scope of the methodology to include additional LFG uses related to upgrading LFG to biomethane and CO₂. Produced CO₂ can be used as a feedstock for fertilizers, syngas, or animal feed. Produced biomethane can be used to replace natural gas, produce hydrogen, or produce graphene with carbon fixation.

The methodology idea note was rejected by Verra, as per Section 3.1.5(3) of the VCS Methodology Development and Review Process, 4.2 (PDF). The decision was based on low climate change mitigation potential compared to other proposals.
